xDB & xConnect

All contact and interaction data is stored centrally in the xDB Collection database. There are several xDB sub-systems that access contact and interaction data via xConnect.

xConnect is the service layer that sits in between the xDB and any trusted client that wants to read, write, or search experience data using the xConnect Client API. Communication must happen over HTTPS and the client must have the appropriate certificate thumbprint. xConnect and xDB are not interchangeable terms - they are two parts of the platform that work together.

Universal Tracker

The Sitecore Universal Tracker (UT) lets you collect data from different sources as the interaction occurs and process the data when the interaction is completed. The Universal Tracker comes with a REST request-response model that allows capturing remote interactions that get stored and processed in Sitecore.

Reference Data Service

The Reference Data Service can be used by features such as interaction aggregation to look up additional information about referenced entities by way of a key. For example, an interaction aggregation processor might use an airport code from an interaction event to look up more information about that airport - such as its geographic location.
